In many respects Matlock seems quite a new town, certainly when compared with Buxton or Bakewell for instance. The reason is that Matlock was an unimportant collection of small villages centred around the church until thermal springs were discovered in Buxton & Bakewell Area holiday guide About the local area The village was quite unique until the 18th century as the vicar had a large degree of freedom in conducting marriage ceremonies and the village became a local ’Gretna Green’.

The geology around Buxton is like much of the rest of the Peak Districts story. Around million years ago, strong earth movements forced the rocks to arch upwards. These formed an elongated dome which dipped gently to the East and West. Bakewell is certainly the better of the 2 towns on the basis of location and atmosphere.
For a village I would recommend Ashford in the Water which has hotels, river, but little traffic and is only 2 miles from Bakewell and 5 from Chatsworth. Baslow is closer and has a nice cricket ground but is based around 2 main roads.
Abstract. The Peak District is a landscape of contrasts—bleak moorland plateaux with escarpments (edges) and deep valleys of the Dark Peak and Eastern Moors; dales and caves of the White Peak fashioned out of limestones, sandstones (gritstones), and shales—all modified by glacial, periglacial and paraglacial processes during Quaternary ice ages.
